Women’s Economic Empowerment

FHI’s Women’s Economic Empowerment Program helps ensure that vulnerable women have access to the training and resources they need to develop and sustain productive livelihoods and pursue economic opportunities.

Women’s Economic Empowerment

FHI’s women’s economic empowerment program focuses on creating opportunities for vulnerable women to increase their incomes and lift themselves out of poverty. . We work with women in deprived communities to develop vocational skills, increase financial literacy, and develop small enterprises.

Women’s economic empowerment means that women have the skills and resources to improve their economic status and move out of poverty. In addition, it means that women and girls can decide on how to utilize their income and other resources and/or jointly make those decisions. Our economic empowerment program increases women’s access to economic resources and opportunities, including jobs, financial services, property and other productive assets, skills development, and market information.

As part of this program, FHI is scaling up a comprehensive approach in the Adaklu District in the Volta Region to support women towards greater participation in accessing economic opportunities. Our Livelihoods Improvement Program in the District contributes significantly to addressing poverty by improving women’s income and supporting them in many ways. For instance, in Adaklu, Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA)  members are able to take out loans with low interest rates to provide for their families, grow their businesses, or pay  medical bills.

In the Biakoye District, our Women’s Empowerment Program supports women economically and socially by providing a set of activities in awareness-raising, training, coaching and mentorship related to entrepreneurship and enterprise development, in addition to providing an opportunity for entrepreneurial women who lack access to funding with interest-free loans to start up or grow their small businesses to overcome poverty and improve livelihoods.

Through its Women Empowerment Program, the FHI is committed to supporting Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls, to ensure they have equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes. The program also supports Sustainable Development Goal 8: “Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all” by enhancing the socio-economic empowerment and self-reliance of women.

FHI has a holistic multi-sectorial approach to the socio-economic empowerment and social cohesion of vulnerable women to strengthen their resilience and their self-reliance. The holistic aspect of FHI’s interventions has allowed it to address different dimensions of a woman’s life. As such, FHI’s programs are not only about training on specific job/ business-related skills, but also focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) and issues around Gender-Based Violence (GBV), as well as child-care issues.
