Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
We strive to provide access to clean water as close as possible to schools, households, and health facilities. We scale up our work in sanitation, focusing on both building the demand for sanitation services.
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
Around the world today, two billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water services, and 3.6 billion people lack safely managed sanitation services. To these people, clean water doesn’t come out of a faucet at home, and it might not even be available within walking distance. Clean water is a precious commodity and is needed by local communities, schools, and health centers, but this is painfully out of reach, particularly in areas where we operate.
Water Sanitation and Hygiene services at school mean that children can stay healthy and focused on learning. And healthcare facilities equipped with Water Sanitation and Hygiene services mean a higher quality of care for patients, including mothers and their newborn babies. Availability of water services in local communities helps the residents in diverse ways, especially for women and girls who spend endless hours fetching water over long distances.
FHI’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Program aims to improve the learning environment for children and teachers with disabilities. Working in Adaklu District in the Volta Region and with funding from the Australian High Commission in Ghana, FHI Promotes Safe and Inclusive Sanitation Services for Students with Physical Disabilities in Primary Schools. The project has so far built gender-sensitive and disability-friendly toilet facilities and carried out hygiene promotion activities geared at engendering behavior change on sanitation hygiene in the interest of maximizing benefits from the newly constructed sanitation facilities.
