Strengthening Basic Education of Children with Special Needs
It is estimated that 77 million children are currently excluded from education globally and of those, one third are children with disability (Education for All, Global Monitoring Report 2020). There are over million people in Ghana living with a disability. Of these people, only 39% have attended a mainstream primary school, and only 9% have attended high school (Ghana National Survey for Persons with Disabilities, 2022).
Such exclusion from education further perpetuates the cycle of disability and poverty. In light of such statistics, FHI, in 2018 rolled out a one-year program in the Adaklu District to enhance participation and achievement in the education of children with disabilities (CwD).
The project not only gives CwD access to their right to education but has contributed to the overarching goal of a more educated and inclusive society.
The project with financial contribution from the Australian High Commission under the Direct Aid Program supported Inclusive Education (IE) through modification, construction and renovation of school facilities such as ramps, drainage, WASH facilities, wheelchairs and crutches for CwDs in Helepke, Kordiabe and Waya all in Adaklu District of the Volta Region of Ghana.
Additionally, the project developed Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials on IE. These materials were used in conjunction with other awareness-raising activities such as drama, radio, sensitization meetings and advocacy. Other components of the project include workshops and seminars to help improve the capacity of teachers in Adaklu District on IE curricula, teaching and learning method.
