Promoting Safe and Inclusive Sanitation Services for Students with Physical Disabilities in Primary Schools
The child’s right to good sanitation is a human right that cannot be taken away or compromised. Children deserve a healthy learning environment with easy access to safe sanitation and hygiene services. Lack of access to adequate sanitation and hygiene services can lower attendance and educational achievement in schools.
Most of the toilets in government schools in the Adaklu District are in a dilapidated state. With crumbling walls and overflowing sewage, the toilets are not in usable condition. However, the students have no choice but to continue to use them, making them vulnerable to a string of health hazards such as diarrhea, cholera, etc.
In 2018, with funding from the Australian High Comission in Ghana under its Development Assistance Program (DAP), FHI worked in Adaklu Waya Government Primary School to increase access to basic sanitation and hygiene services.
The overall objective of this initiative was to enhance the learning environment for the students and teachers and create an enabling school environment, particularly paying special attention to children with disabilities.
The project supported the construction of gender-sensitive and disability-friendly toilet facilities. In addition, the project carried out hygiene promotion activities geared at engendering behavior change on sanitation hygiene in the interest of maximizing benefits from the newly constructed sanitation facilities.
The project significantly reduced hygiene-related diseases. It increased school attendance and contributed to children with disabilities dignity and inclusion. The project promoted equity. All children, including children with disabilities, are entitled to equally access WASH facilities, and all children benefited from improved hygiene practices promoted by the project
