Fighting the Effects of Climate Change on Women and Girls
Women and girls are often disproportionately impacted by climate change. Women are often responsible for food production and farming activities in areas where we operate. Variations in extreme weather events due to climate change can negatively impact crop yields, decreasing income and food insecurity for women and their families. In the Biakoye District, FHI fights to prevent women and girls from being negatively impacted by climate change, helps them adapt to its effects, and makes sure their voices are heard.

Climate change exacerbates gender-based violence (GBV). In districts like the Biakoye, FHI research has shown the impacts of climate change have forced girls to drop out of school, putting them at risk of harmful traditional practices such as early marriage. Addressing this challenge, we implement gender-sensitive adaptation measures in the district, focusing on communities most affected by climate change. Women and girls in the Biakoye District are the first and the most affected by climate change. But they are not giving up. A whole new generation of women and girls is adapting to a new tougher climate reality to survive and thrive.
Women, especially in developing regions, rely heavily on climate-sensitive sectors like agriculture. In Biakoye District, women produce about 60% of all food. But the adverse effects of climate change threaten their yield and, by extension, their communities’ food security.
FHI Support initiatives like “Climate Champions,” which works to empower women through training in sustainable farming techniques, as well as providing resources that ensure not just their livelihoods but also the food security of entire communities.
In addition, the FHI works in the Biakoye District to educate and empower community-based programs that provide women with the knowledge and tools they need to combat climate challenges. We also raise awareness through community dialogues, workshops, and campaigns to shed light on the gendered impacts of climate change.
