Adaklu District
In the Adaklu District, our work focuses on supporting vulnerable children, including children with disabilities; improving maternal and child health; and empowering women with livelihood opportunities.
Our Work Across the District
Strengthening Basic Education of Children with Special Needs
It is estimated that 77 million children are currently excluded from education globally, and of those, one third are Children with Disabilities (CwD) (Education for All, 2020). In light of such statistics, FHI, in 2018, with funding from the Australian High Commission, rolled out a one-year program in the Adaklu District to enhance participation and achievement in the education for CwD.
Livelihoods Improvement Program
The majority of the world’s 1.3 billion poorest people are women and girls, often prevented from exercising their rights to fully participate in society and suffering disproportionately from this injustice. FHI’s Women’s Economic Empowerment Program in the Adaklu District seeks to address this, as women and girls hold the key to reducing poverty and to making the greatest improvements to the lives of people.
Improving Maternal and Newborn Health and Nutrition
When a mother is undernourished during pregnancy, her own nutritional health isn’t the only health at stake. Any complications brought on by low nutrition during pregnancy, such as anemia, hypertension, miscarriages, premature delivery, or maternal death, will have an effect on her child as well. We work with mothers in the Adaklu District to improve their health and that of their newborn children.
Promoting Safe and Inclusive Sanitation Services for Students with Physical Disabilities in Primary Schools
Children deserve a healthy learning environment with easy access to safe sanitation services. In 2022, FHI received financial support from the Australia High Commission to construct gender-sensitive and disability-friendly toilet facilities in Adaklu Waya Government Primary School.
