Health and Nutrition
We work towards the survival and wellbeing of the world’s most vulnerable communities; while ensuring they obtain the knowledge and resources to keep themselves and their families healthy and nourished.
Health and Nutrition
There has been slow progress in reducing under-five and maternal mortality due to the absence of special care that babies require, particularly in their first 28 days of life. Although there has been some improvement in child and maternal health in Ghana in the last two decades, mothers and children are still dying from preventable causes. The 2017 Maternal and Health Survey reported the underfive mortality ratio to be 52 deaths per 1,000 live births (GMHS, 2017). Maternal mortality ratio in 2017 stood at 319 deaths per 1,000 births, as revealed by the Health Minister during a ceremony to unveil the combined Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Record Book for Ghana (Myjoyonline, 29-10-2017).
We seek to address a lack of access to basic services, including health care; promote good nutrition practices and supplement diets; educate communities about hygiene; and alleviate poverty and inequality.
We pay particular attention to maternal, child, and adolescent health, the needs of those in remote areas, and gender equality.
Access to quality nutrition services in health facilities and across communities is essential to prevent and manage malnutrition and promote optimal nutrition across all life stages.
Good health is essential to the well-being of individuals, families, communities, and entire nations. Health and Nutrition is core to the development objectives FHI’s works to accomplish every day. Almost half of deaths for children under five years of age are attributed to malnutrition, and those children who survive malnutrition have compromised cognitive and physical development.
FHI and its partners work with local communities in Ghana to equip people with the skills, tools, and resources to improve their families’ health, diets, and nutrition, especially early in life when it matters most.
FHI’s Health and Nutrition investments support evidence-based, high-impact interventions that improve health and address the immediate and root causes of malnutrition to save lives. In the Adaklu District our program Improving Maternal and Newborn Health and Nutrition prevents stunting, wasting, and other health complications that come from a lack of proper food and nutrients, particularly targeting mothers and newborns.
FHI is committed to Improving Health to save lives and protect communities from deadly diseases. Working in the Agotime Ziope District, we help mothers safely give birth and deliver life-saving vaccines. Working hand-in-hand with the Agotime Ziope District Directorate of Health to change the landscape of public health.
